Actually, the local empowerment section of this video brings back to mind one of my most troubling critiques of Teach for America: rather than building stronger and more self-sustained communities by fashioning strong teachers out of the people already in the community, TFA ships in a lot of This Guy.
With that said, I do genuinely believe that TFA is having a talk very similar to this one in its interview process. I remember having been asked a stream of questions very similar to these, and I can only hope that I gave answers which reflected some kind of awareness for the dynamics of communities and local empowerment.
Long story short: I REALLY don’t want to be This Guy and I’m going into a job which could very easily make me look and act like This Guy if I don’t fight it.
